the new benchmark smartphone for less than 300 dollars July 15, 2020 – Posted in: Smartphone news
Who can stop Xiaomi? Obviously nobody. The Chinese giant continues its march and launches two new, affordable smartphones: the Redmi Note 9 and the Redmi Note 9 Pro. These two models are sold from 199 euros and are successors of the excellent Redmi Note 8 and Redmi Note 8 Pro. The latter had also established itself as a benchmark for smartphones with less than 300 euros. Does the Redmi Note 9 Pro have the weapons to be successful?
Xiaomi definitely uses the means of his ambitions. The Redmi Note 9 Pro is characterized by a particularly neat design, a solid technical data sheet and a promising quadruple photo module. That’s why I exchanged one of my two smartphones for the Redmi Note 9 Pro for a few days. Here is my full review of the Redmi Note 9 Pro.
Design and screen
Little hands, get ready for some gymnastics. With its dimensions (165.8 x 76.7 x 8.8 mm) and its overweight (209 g) The Redmi Note 9 Pro has its place in the giant family next to the OnePlus 8 Pro or Galaxy S20 Ultra. Nevertheless, Xiaomi strives for the design by slightly bulging the back of the smartphone, which makes handling considerably easier.
Choosing a glossy glass with Gorilla Glass 5 protection from Corning gives the Redmi Note 9 Pro a first-class appearance, even if the surface quality does not match that of a very high-quality smartphone. This does not prevent the client from giving free rein to his creativity. He chooses a two-tone color (in our test version of the Note 9 Pro) with two thirds fluted, the other smooth. This small device has its effect, so I regret that Xiaomi does not offer it for its other colors (black and white).
Obviously determined to stand out from the competition Chinese chooses an original integration of the photo module. The sensors are arranged in a black square in the middle. Xiaomi does not revolutionize anything (Huawei has already proposed this type of assembly), but has the advantage that the traditional vertical module remains positioned in the upper left corner.
The front of the Redmi Note 9 Pro is more classic. Surrounded by black edges (the chin is a bit wide), 6.7 inch screen has room for the punch with the front sensor.
Incidentally, the USB-C, the speaker and the 3.5 mm socket (the large return) are grouped at the bottom. On the right, the volume buttons and the power switch (which hides the fingerprint reader) fall perfectly under the finger. Finally, the drawer for two nanoSIM and a microSD is on the left edge.
Quality LCD screen
Apart from Samsung, no manufacturer can offer a smartphone equipped with an AMOLED panel for less than 300 euros. It is therefore not surprising that The Redmi Note 9 Pro has an IPS LCD screen. The 6.7-inch diagonal and the Full HD + definition (2400 x 1080 pixels) will appeal to fans of films, series and games, especially since the overall quality is more than correct, provided you adjust the parameters slightly.
In fact, during this test of the Redmi Note 9 Pro, I noticed huge differences in the profiles selected. There are three display modes available: Automatically adapts the rendering to the environment, default shows neutral colors and Saturated increases the colors and strengthens the contrasts. I strongly recommend choosing the latter, which is much more pleasant every day.
Despite these advantages, the screen of the Redmi Note 9 Pro didn’t quite convince me. Questionable, too low brightness For example, prevent the use of the smartphone in direct sunlight. Do I have to indicate that watching a video on the beach is excluded this summer?
Performance and interface
Xiaomi seems to have prioritized autonomy rather than performance. Contrary to all expectations, the Pro model does not have the most powerful processor in the product range. It therefore integrates a Snapdragon 720G chip when his brother inherited a G85 heliate from Mediatek. If the followers of the kikalaplus size Most users will be happy with the performance provided.
Well supported by 6 GB RAM and the Adreno 618 graphics chip. The Redmi Note 9 Pro offers the bare essentials for everyday use. Applications start up quickly, animations and transitions are smooth, and multitasking is well managed. In my test, the Redmi Note 9 Pro shows its limits in the game. Xiaomi prefers fluidity and limits the graphics quality to a medium level in the most demanding 3D games (Call of Duty Mobile, Fortnite). Also pay attention to the duration of your games: after a few minutes I noticed a significant rise in temperature.
By integrating an NFC chip, you can use the Redmi Note 9 Pro to circulate in certain public transport systems and pay on the go.
MIUI 11: still so pleasant
If he just revealed MIUI 12, Xiaomi ships the Redmi Note 9 Pro with MIUI 11. Logical in relation to the manufacturer’s roadmap. We therefore find a refined and pleasant to use surface, an elegant graphic charter and smooth animations. Xiaomi also reduces the number of pre-installed applications and offers a good package of Google services as a bonus (more than the American needs to get a free operating system).
However, we always have to Ignore the application drawer so kind to Android users. A bug that can be fixed by installing a Launcher Alternative.
Among the other vulnerabilities of MIUI 11, anti-virus analysis is undoubtedly one of the most annoying when downloading any application, especially since Xiaomi uses it to send a good advertising package with every scan without restriction. Fortunately, a quick tour of the settings will disable this feature.
Autonomy and charging
If the impressive format of the Redmi Note 9 Pro does not make handling easier, Xiaomi can integrate it generous 5020 mAh battery. It is coupled with the Snapdragon 720G chip, which does not show impressive performance and protects the battery. So count versatile use for two days and up to two and a half days by activating the energy saving mode. With such results, the Redmi Note 9 Pro is therefore automatically one of the most durable smartphones on the market.
Despite the low price The Redmi Note 9 Pro is supplied with a 33 W quick charger In this way, he can gain half of his life points in half an hour. A full charge takes about an hour. The most demanding will regret the lack of wireless charging. Xiaomi knows how to contain costs and do no miracles.
Xiaomi is one of the least stingy manufacturers in terms of the number of photo optics. The Redmi Note 9 Pro is part of this process and has no fewer than four sensors:
- a wide angle : 26 mm (f / 1.9); 64 megapixel sensor (1 / 1.72 ”; 0.8 µm Photosite); PDAF
- an ultra wide angle : 13 mm (f / 2.2); 8-megapixel sensor (1/4 ”; 1.12 µm photo page)
- a macro lens (f / 2.4) with 5 megapixel sensor
- a lens for the depth of field (f / 2.4) with 2 megapixel sensor
With this very complete module, the Redmi Note 9 Pro is therefore very versatile. But what about photographic quality? General The new child convinced in this test. If the good quality of the shots in good lighting conditions doesn’t surprise anyone, the Redmi Note 9 Pro is good in the game and maintains a fairly homogeneous rendering between the different shooting modes. The very effective ultra-wide angle deserves special mention (even if the loss of detail is obvious).
The smartphone is also characterized by its macro mode, with which subjects can be photographed from a very short distance. If I sometimes had to be patient to get a convincing result (the lack of optical stabilization requires a certain concentration), The end result is very attractive.
Portrait mode is also a success. The combination of the main sensor and the depth-of-field sensor makes it possible to obtain portraits with precise cropping and a natural bokeh.
However, not everything is perfect. It is not the Redmi Note 9 Pro does not meet expectations in low light conditions (Noise and grain). If the night mode slightly improves the end result, the whole thing remains more than mediocre. Finally, in the absence of a telephoto lens, The 2x digital zoom cannot be compared to the competition. Too bad, but we can’t have everything for this price.
In front With the 32-megapixel sensor you can take successful selfies. I still noticed a difference in contrast and skin tone between standard mode and self-portrait mode. Nothing really annoying.
Finally, The Redmi Note 9 Pro can film up to 4K at 30 fps. You can imagine that a smartphone at this price cannot compete with models that are sold up to five times more expensive. You can also immortalize some memories with family or friends. But don’t imagine making a short film worthy of the first Spielberg.

In any case, Xiaomi knows the recipe for the best value for money better than anyone else. The Redmi Note 9 Pro did an excellent job with the Redmi Note 8 Pro and is thus a new benchmark with less than 300 euros. Its design, its autonomy, its very quick charging and its talent as a photographer are among the main advantages that I gain from this test. However, it is not without flaws. The screen lacks brightness, the performance could be better, MIUI 11 can sometimes be annoying and the photo quality can still improve. For 249 euros, however, these are more than acceptable small weaknesses. I also recommend this Redmi Note 9 Pro to anyone who wants a complete and affordable smartphone. Provided, of course, to love the imposing models.
