Oppo also wants to design its own processors July 15, 2020 – Posted in: Smartphone news

Back when Xiaomi was traveling around the world with its high-end killer smartphones sold online, Oppo focused on selling in physical stores in China. But little by little the brand has made a name for itself in Europe, America and the north. And today it is one of the main players in the smartphone market. At the same time, Oppo has improved its products and invested heavily in research and development. Oppo may even be able to manufacture its own processors for smartphones shortly.

In contrast to Samsung, Apple or Huawei, Oppo does not develop its own processors. For example, the Oppo Find X2 Pro, the new high-end model from this Chinese manufacturer, uses the Snapdragon 865 from American Qualcomm, but does not use an Oppo chip.

But that can change soon. According to Chinese media Caixing Global, Oppo President Liu Bo confirmed that the company will develop its own processors for its electronic devices in order to differentiate. “We need to tackle chip technology and make it the key driver of our future growth.”would have explained the entrepreneur. Before this confirmation, unofficial sources had already mentioned this project.

Oppo: Independence from Qualcomm chips?

And like with Oppo, Google should also want to develop its own processors for pixel smartphones in order to obtain optimized components for its software. At the moment, however, this has not been confirmed by Mountain View.

With regard to Oppo, developing its own processors would not only enable the Chinese manufacturer to differentiate itself. The latter should also be less dependent on their suppliers, especially those over which the United States can control.

Reminder: Huawei has been punished by the U.S. since 2019. The latter, for example, can no longer pre-install Google applications on their smartphones. And Washington is also currently threatening to threaten the supply of processors from this manufacturer with new sanctions that imply its Taiwanese supplier TSMC. Though TSMC is a Taiwanese company, it uses American technology to do its jobs.
