He had everything to be successful, but … July 15, 2020 – Posted in: Smartphone news
I tested the Xiaomi Mi Note 10 for ten days to give a final opinion. This notice on the smartphone is based on the latest version, namely MIUI 11.0.7. Below you will find my first impressions of this smartphone from the famous Chinese manufacturer, which were not far from fulfilling all the criteria.
Design and hardware
As usual, I start my test of the Xiaomi Mi Note 10 with the technical properties of the smartphone. As with the Mi 9T, Xiaomi opted for a mid-range SoC, the Snapdragon 730G, for its latest device. The Mi Note 10 also has 6 GB of RAM. As with most models released this year, the experience is very fluid every day, with one exception (and uncomfortable): the camera. The base model has 128 GB for storage, which is more than enough for me. The latter is not expandable even if you have a dual SIM slot.
Even if the use in this test of the Xiaomi Mi Note 10 is fluid, I think it’s a shame that no more powerful SoC was selected, but Xiaomi announced the release of a Mi 10 Pro (our test) in the next few weeks, 2 GB of RAM, total memory of 256 GB and an eighth lens added. No mention of another SoC – which I find unfortunate.
The Mi Note 10 worked perfectly in all the tests I did with games like PUBG and Call of Duty Mobile. The slowness of the camera is really a shame. The overall score in the Antutu benchmark is 261,306, which is much less than that of competitors such as the OnePlus 7T or the Huawei P30 Pro. However, the Mi Note 10 that we tested is cheaper than the latter.
But one of the biggest advantages of this Xiaomi Mi Note 10 during my test is its screen. The magnificent curved OLED panel is huge, namely 6.47 inches, in this point and in design it strongly reminds of the Huawei P30 Pro, it is also difficult to recognize one or the other at first glance. ‘Eye. I think the color reproduction is excellent and the density of 398 dpi gives a great reproduction.
Only from my point of view: 90 Hz is missing. But the panel of this Xiaomi Mi Note 10 is a real success and a pleasure for the eyes. The brightness is up (600 nits), even if it’s not the best on the market at this point. In my opinion, this is one of the positive points of the smartphone.
The sensor is shaped like a teardrop-shaped notch, and the back of the Mi Note 10 is also curved. The five sensors occupy an important place and you will rock the smartphone when it is placed on a table. This is not a problem for me since I used the included shell from the start of my Xiaomi Mi Note 10 test.
Even if the smartphone is solid, I find the grip pleasant during my test of this Xiaomi Mi Note 10. For security reasons, you can choose face recognition or the fingerprint sensor below the screen. The latter is very responsive, like all smartphones I’ve tested this year.
The feeling is mixed on the audio level. On the one hand, the presence of a jack connector is a good thing, on the other hand, the only speaker on the underside of the Mi Note 10 is just average. This is one of the weak points of this new Xiaomi model. I continue my test of the Mi Note 10 with the available colors.
With the colors you have the choice between black, white and green. Everyone will give an opinion as this is a subjective point. In summary, an excellent screen, average performance, but largely sufficient, and a very impressive smartphone with a weight of 208 grams. With a Snapdragon 855+, the Mi Note 10 would have immediately improved its quality / price ratio. Next part of this Mi Note 10 test: the operating system.
MIUI 11: night mode arrives
Although MIUI 11 is still based on Android 9, I find the operating system more and more pleasant over time. The great software innovation of the MIUI 11 is the introduction of the dark mode, which saves a little more battery on this Mi Note 10.
In my test version there are some translation errors in the configuration and in the settings, which will certainly be adjusted with the previous updates. The conclusion is the same as in my test of the Mi 9T Pro, MIUI is a matter of taste. We are far from the experience with Android or OxygenOS and closer to iOS or EMUI. It is up to you to see what you prefer, but at this fork I always choose to change the launcher and switch to Nova.
This is my big disappointment about this Mi Note 10 test: the photo application. Is it MIUI, SoC or the power required to manage the five sensors?

Photo: five sensors above, an application that does not meet the requirements
Xiaomi has access to all communication related to this 108 megapixel main sensor, which is a feat on paper. Here is the composition of the individual sensors of the Xiaomi Mi Note 10:

At the time of this writing, the camera application proposed by Xiaomi is very slow, this is its main weakness. At the start, the transition between the different modes in the settings is anything but smooth. I was waiting for a stability update to write this part of the test and received it a few days ago. It hasn’t changed anything about the behavior of the camera, and it’s a shame because the potential is there.
In the preamble of the photo section, remember to deactivate the watermark “Recording with Mi Note 10 Penta camera” so that your first photo is not damaged. The main 108 megapixel sensor can take great pictures (whether in 108 MPX mode or 27 MPX mode using pixel binning), as you can see here:
The 108 megapixel mode is interesting, but I don’t see much difference to a 27 megapixel shot, which is much easier when exporting. Here is an example of a 27 MP photo:
The ultra wide angle is pretty good in our review of the Xiaomi Mi Note 10, just like the Zoom X2 and X5. In contrast to the iPhone 11 Pro, colors between the sensors tend to be treated differently. The x10 hybrid zoom can be useful in certain situations and the images are correct. For the X50, we are just gimmick marketing, it is absolutely not exploitable in the state, although it may be useful to read an inscription remotely.
A new lens appears in macro mode with a 2 MP sensor. Excellent shots can be taken in good conditions, even though I found the OnePlus 7T to be more regular.
Night mode is also very successful and you can take very good pictures. What a shame that this photo application is so slow.
Portrait mode is also very efficient and cutting faces (and especially hair) is one of the best I’ve ever had in my hands. For selfies, the Xiaomi Mi Note 10 also performs very well in our full test.
At the end of the photo, the Mi Note 10 has one of the most promising combinations on the market in my opinion, but the camera app is too moody, which is a shame. If Xiaomi manages to solve these problems with a software update, the Mi Note 10 can test the Huawei P30 Pro, Pixel 4 and iPhone 11 Pro – even if they are considerably more expensive!
Xiaomi Mi Note 10 battery life: size matters
In the photo, autonomy on paper was the big highlight of the Mi Note 10. Simply put: it is. With a capacity of 5260 mAh, it can take almost two days with conventional use. I haven’t seen this on a smartphone since the P30 Pro. In addition, Xiaomi includes the 30 W quick charger in the box of the Mi Note 10, and luckily because it takes 100% charging to take about 2 hours. So remember to take your charger with you, otherwise it will take a long time for the Mi Note 10 to be fully charged.
In our test of the Mi Note 10, show just a little damage in terms of autonomy and battery, it’s the lack of wireless charging. It could have been a real plus for this model, even if it can be used in USB-C to charge other devices (which I used to charge my P30 Pro during my 6-hour wait at the airport). This is fixed in the Mi 10 Pro.

The Xiaomi Mi Note 10 is sold at a price of 549 euros. For me, the two most important are the autonomy and the quality of the screen. If the camera application is “fixed”, the photo will clearly be the last one. On the side of the black dots that we highlighted in our Xiaomi Mi Note 10 review, MIUI is definitely not my cup of tea, which is very subjective. The speaker is also disappointing.
I still find it difficult to find this smartphone in the Xiaomi range. With about fifteen smartphones launched this year, it will be difficult to read the series. The Mi Note 10 could have been at the top of the range, but I prefer the Mi 9T Pro. It remains to be seen whether the Mi Note 10 Pro will deliver a Snapdragon 855+ or not, the latest news is not.
In the end, the Xiaomi Mi Note 10 is the opposite of Pixel 4 for me: the characteristics of one are the faults of the other and vice versa.
