According to IDC, Google Pixel delivered more smartphones than OnePlus in 2019 July 15, 2020 – Posted in: Smartphone news
Despite all efforts, Google is still far from bringing smartphone brands such as Samsung, Apple, Huawei or Xiaomi together. But bit by bit, pixel smartphones are gaining market share. And contrary to what one would have thought, the year 2019 would have been relatively good for the Google brand.
At least, Francisco Jeronimo, vice vice president of IDC, says in a tweet. “@Google continues to expand the # Pixel portfolio and sales are increasing. Deliveries rose 52% year over year in 2019, the highest volume ever recorded with good performances in the U.S., Western Europe and Japan. More units than @oneplus are now being shipped, but it is still far from reaching the Top10. “we read in the publication.

This may come as a surprise when you consider that articles mentioned disappointing sales for Pixel 3a and Pixel 4, both of which were launched in 2019. However, Francisco Jeronimo explains that the success of the Pixel 3 further increased Google’s revenue in the first quarter of 2019. And when Pixel 3a and Pixel 4 had mixed starts, the IDC manager spoke of a “full impact in 2019” what indicates that post-launch sales were still relatively good. Finally, it is also recalled that Google has decided to offer its pixel smartphones in three new markets in 2019.
That’s right. Pixel 3a & Pixel4 sold fewer units than Pixel3 in the first two quarters. However:
– The 2nd Q of sales for Px3 was 1Q2019
– Google launched Px3a & 4 in 2019. Weaker starts, but the full impact was in 2019
– Google has expanded the Pixel portfolio to three new markets– Francisco Jeronimo (@fjeronimo) June 9, 2020
It remains to be seen how Google’s mobile department will develop this year. In addition to the general decline in global smartphone sales due to the pandemic, Mountain View could also suffer the consequences of its technical choices for Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL this year (we think the video below is mixed).
However, thanks to the Pixel 4a, Google Pixel could also increase sales. As a reminder, this is a new mid-range smartphone that the company could launch in June or July.
A new strategy?
There are currently many rumors about Google’s next pixel smartphones. One of these rumors suggests that the Pixel 5 could use a chip for medium-range devices instead of using the Snapdragon 865, which can be found on devices like the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra or the Mi 10 Pro from Xiaomi. Why ? This could allow Google to offer cheaper premium smartphones.
Other sources indicate that Google currently wants to develop its own processors for smartphones. This would enable the company to optimize the integration between hardware and software like Apple.
